I always get asked about this topic and truth be told, I still occasionally suffer with procrastination. As annoying as it is, all our habits have some purpose in our lives, so the trick isn’t to avoid them but manage them to our advantage.
Here are a few survival tips I employ when the first 2 energy sources (#1 positive thinking, #2 Nescafe) don’t seem to be working:
Mind Chatter: Quiet often we blow the task out of all proportion in our head, or I usually have a list of 1000 things I needed done yesterday. Solution – write down all your digital marketing ideas and other things to do on a piece of paper and get it out of your head.
Bite-sized chunks: This one is my favourite. Circle 3 things that are urgent, and just focus on doing 1 of them. Break it down into small components and set time limits to make the overall project more manageable. Search for which parts of your marketing can be outsourced or delegated. It helps to have a team who can support you with that!
Ask empowering questions: Remember “Energy flows where your focus goes”, so what are you focusing on? Which part of your online marketing is urgent and will impact your bottom line? What part are you going to enjoy doing? And how can you free up your time instead if its something you won’t enjoy – delegate or outsource it?
Take a pit stop: Give yourself a rest from your activities – short breaks and moving your body are great ways to help change your state of mind. Go for a walk around the block, make a cup of tea or just take some deep breaths. These small but effective things will help you to get your thoughts in order, rejuvenate your energy levels and kick-start your motivation. Remember that marketing is both a creative and functional process, and your marketing communications will only come out as clearly as they are perceived on the inside.
Sometimes you just can’t fight the urge to procrastinate. When that happens, you need to employ some trusted and proven methods if you know that you’ve been delaying your online marketing efforts.
